Made By Rae: Washi Dress Expansion Pack

DSC_1639Made By Rae’s Washi Dress Expansion Pack is here!  It’s the Mr. Potato Head of dresses.  You start with the popular Washi dress pattern Rae released last year (Mr. Potato) and then change it how you’d like: add a collar here, change the sleeves there, pop on a bow in front.  It allows for *endless possibilities by starting with a pattern that is already familiar.  Brilliant.

I had the chance to view the new options before they were released when I went up to Rae’s studio last month.  I had a hard time choosing which version to make, but couldn’t resist View C with the pointed Peter Pan collar, pointed cap sleeves, and bodice lining with elastic casing in the back.  No shirring?  Woohoo!dsc_4238dsc_4271The pattern has you follow the directions for making a Washi dress and then adds the fun additions as you go along. Rae’s instructions are detailed and include hints, helpful pictures, and a Century Gothic font that makes me really happy. dsc_4240I contemplated whether or not to make the collar out of the polka dot fabric because it doesn’t exactly match (when you look up close) but I decided to go for it.  I love the way it turned out.  dsc_4247My father-in-law treated us to a trip to Mexico last week so I thought it’d be a perfect place to take some pictures of the dress.  My skin type doesn’t really allow me to get tan but my freckles did pop out a lot.  These pictures were taken the last day of our trip.  Sad, I know.  If only they’d all melt together, then I’d be super tan.  I guess I’ll have to settle for a bunch of teeny tiny tans.  dsc_4263dsc_4254I would highly recommend this expansion pack and I can’t wait to make the other options.  dsc_4278

LOL the “Mr Potato Head” of patterns!!! You are so hilarious!! And a genius. DUDE, we should have NAMED IT THAT!!!

J/K that probably would have violated a registered trademark.

That would have been hilarious! I’m sure Playskool wouldn’t mind because they need help with spelling anyway and your pattern is amazing! We should just make a mini version for Mrs. Potato Head and all will be fine.

Have a wonderful holiday and I hope to see you again soon!

    Hi Shannon –
Just wondering if you lined this dress or not. I have the same voile and would like to make a Washi with it was trying to determine if it was too sheer or if you could go without a lining because of the dark colors.
    Thanks! Love your polka-dotty collar!

      Hi Taya,
Thanks for your message! I actually made this dress out of quilting cotton so I didn’t have to line the whole dress. I lined the bodice and followed the directions from Rae’s expansion pack for adding the elastic to the back, instead of shirring. That way I didn’t have to fear the shirr 🙂

Victoria, a woman at Rae’s retreat with me, made a Washi with that voile and she didn’t have to line it. So I honestly think you would be fine without it.

      Hope that helps!

Thanks, Shannon – I appreciate the reply! Now I just have to find some time to sit down and sew the thing! Warm weather must be right around the corner… 🙂
